Veryan receiving her award from the Civic Mayor of Croydon

Veryan was nominated for the Civic Mayor of Croydon Awards by Cllr Claire Bonham, Liberal Democrat councillor for Crystal Palace & Upper Norwood, with support from local campaigner and Friends group member Nigel Dingley.

Claire said:

"I am delighted that Veryan has been recognised by Croydon Council for her selfless service to the local community. The Friends of Upper Norwood Rec have done a fabulous job in bringing people together to maintain a precious green space which is such a focal point in our area.

"With so many activities on offer, I really do encourage local people to use the Rec and get involved with this welcoming and friendly group".

Ms Wilkie-Jones said:

"It was an honour to receive this award on behalf of the Friends group in recognition of all the good work our team has done with help from the community.

“It's been a wonderful experience to lead the group over the last 2 and a half years to nurture our amazing green space and bring the community together. We're grateful for the local volunteers and businesses that have supported us, and look forward to seeing what else we can achieve together over the next few years.”

Since it was established the community group has planted hundreds of young trees and bulbs, installed bird and bat boxes, dug a pond for wildlife, gardened and kept the park free of litter, supported residents to buy engraved benches, held monthly volunteer days and annual summer parties and held fundraising events, raising £6,000 so far.
