Private renters in Crystal Palace are set to be ignored by Croydon Council, who have just completed a consultation  on a private landlord licensing scheme in the borough.

One of the proposals is for a selective licensing scheme for all privately rented homes (excluding HMOs) within fourteen wards to address the prevalence of poor housing conditions. The consultation leaves out Crystal Palace & Upper Norwood ward in the far north of Croydon, as the Council claims it does not meet the criteria for inclusion.

Claire Bonham, Liberal Democrat councillor for Crystal Palace & Upper Norwood, said:

"I am very disappointed that private renters in my ward will not be covered by this scheme if it is adopted by Croydon Council. The Council is saying that if you don't live in one of the 14 wards and aren't in an HMO, you will be left out. That is manifestly unfair. No-one should have to put up with poor-quality housing, regardless of where they live.

“I have written to the Council asking them to include Crystal Palace as part of the scheme and for them to consider all wards.”
